One Greek word for friend is 4139. plesion play-see'-on neuter of a derivative of pelas (near); (adverbially) close by; as noun, a neighbor, i.e. fellow (as man, countryman, Christian or friend): --near, neighbour.
Friends come from different races, cultures, customs, and faiths. Forming an endearing friendship that endures throughout the tides takes courage, wisdom, and the love of God. Proverbs 17:17 tells us a friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. A friend is as precious as a member of your family. They remain faithful in the best of times and even through a crisis. Like Jesus was to His disciples, a friend sticks closer than a brother because a friend offers unconditional, selfless love. A great example of this was the relationship, Jonathan had with David. His loyalty to David was deeper than to Saul, his father. He loved David as much as he loved himself. (1 Samuel18:1-4; 20:14-17). A genuine friend is forever committed.
Their love is loyal and faithful defying all logic and reason. (Proverbs 18:24). Jesus loved at all times, and He came not to be served but to serve. (Mark 10:45). Regardless of any challenge He met, His love never wavered. So, we must resemble Him in our relationships with others. However, a friend is not only someone who appreciates and supports you. It is somebody who is reliable, sensitive to your needs and prays for you.
So, a friend is ...
Sometimes, a friend is a word of encouragement. (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV)
Sometimes, a friend is a listening ear. (James 1:19)
Sometimes, a friend is available when you need someone to be available for you. They think more of you than they do of themselves. (Galatians 5:14)
Sometimes, a friend forgives a fault and will not let the offense come between us. (Proverbs 17:9)
Sometimes, a friend is telling someone the truth when a lie may make them feel better. So, a friend speaks the truth in love. (Ephesians 4:15, NLT)
Sometimes, a friend has to warn you, even when you believe you are doing the right thing. (Galatians 6:1)
Above all, a friend exhibits patience that preserves under the most strenuous challenges and worst offenses. Why? Because a friend loves all the time. (Ephesians 4:2; Luke 6:37; 1 Peter 4:8, ESV).
If you have been blessed with this rare and priceless soul, give a shout-out and let them know how valuable they are.
I pray the song, Friends by Michael W. Smith reminds you how blessed you are to have a real friend.
