You Are Precious in The Sight of God

You Are Precious in The Sight of God

I am special to God. He has an extraordinary plan for my life. He see further into my future than anyone. So, I can do what I thought I never could. He sees me doing great things even before He blesses me with the skills to perform them.

When an unforeseen event happens, that could cause you much despair, someone may be prone to seek help from somebody they shouldn’t. You’re looking for a favorable answer for hope and restoration. In this story, found in 2 Kings 1:13-15; we see King Ahaziah falls through the lattice in his upper chamber while in Samaria. His severe injuries results in him becoming sick. He sends a captain of fifty men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekon, for an answer. They meet Elijah, whom the angel of God has given an urgent message to deliver to the king. He asks; Is it because there is no god in Israel that you are sending to inquire of an idol god? He assures them that Ahaziah would not recover, but he would die.

This report doesn’t please the king, so he orders two other companies of men to bring Elijah to him. They approach him and say; O man of God, the king says; come down. Elijah says; If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you. (V 10-12). Fire consumes them.

1. This is the same Elijah who told King Ahab there would be a severe drought. (1Kings 17:1)

2. The Lord commanded the ravens to feed him and kept a brook from dying up to provide him with water. (1 Kings 17:2-7)

3. Ahab referred to him as a trouble maker because he had abandoned the ways of God to serve Baal. The house of Ahab didn't want to hear truth; which was what Elijah always taught them. It's amazing how people get an attitude when they're confronted with their sinful ways. It picks them to the heart and woe unto the messenger who speaks the Word of truth to anyone who doesn't want to recieve it. (1 Kings 18:17).

4. The same Elijah who raised the wifow's son back to life. (1 Kings 17:17-24).

5. Elijah who defeated 450 false prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-39)

6. The same Elijah who Jezebel, Ahsb's wife; put a contract out on his life. (1 Kings 19:1-1-3).

So, let's see what happens to this next group of men? Will they be consumed by fire? Or will they obtain mercy?

The captain of the third group greets Elijah, pleas with him to regard their life as valuable. And he honors this request. But Ahaziah dies according to God’s Word. (Vs 17-18).

Desperate times call for desperate measures. These decisions could cause you everything you hold dear. Ahaziah could have asked the men to inquire of Elijah. But like his father, King Ahab and mother, he put his trust in the wrong source. He worshipped Baal and provoked the God of Israel.(1 Kings 16:29-22:1-53). The Lord does grant mercy while giving us time to repent. Anyone who blatantly disregards such warnings is confirming their eternal destination. We can learn much from the house of Ahab and Jezabel.

Realizing the outcome of the previous men, the third squad used wisdom and gained unprecedented favor from God. If I learned anything from this account, it’s those who humble before Him, acknowledges their inadequacy; holds a special place in His heart. This man bowed before Elijah because he recognized who he was in the kingdom of God. He sealed their destiny. He asked to let their life be precious in his sight.

This is how God sees you. The Lord holds you in high esteem. Regardless of who you are, you’re of utmost value to Him. Nothing you do can refute that fact. You’ve made mistakes, have flaws and fallen short of His glory. Whatever you have done, no sin you’ve committed is so tremendous it causes Him to hold it against you. He thought so much of us; he gave His Son to die for everyone. Even if you had been the sole person on earth, He still would have done that. Though others who don’t regard you as important, He sees you as extraordinary. Like these men who found grace with Elijah, He knows greatness lies in you.

What did Elijah see in them he didn’t observe in the two other groups? They approached him with respect, reverence, and honor. The captain and his men didn’t assume their status with the King granted them special privileges. Unlike the prior troops, they didn’t command the man of God to come down at the word of the king. Their leader bowed before Elijah because he recognized the man of God’s history with the Almighty. He knew he was in the presence of God. He asked for mercy and compassion. In doing so, he preserved their life.

In God’s mind, you’re the apple of His eye. You're given special recognition, though of no importance to most. It doesn’t mean you’re God’s favorite because He regards everyone as significant. He didn’t die for one; He gave His life for humanity. The Lord sees us as individuals and appoints a particular gift to each of us. You can contribute something incredible to the service of the Lord. He can use your unique talent to bless countless others. (Roman’s 12:3-8). No matter your place in society, even if you didn’t measure up in the eyes of someone, your worth is priceless. Your misguided decisions could affect the quality of your life, but it won’t diminish how precious you are to Him. My brothers and sisters, you mean everything to God. Never allow anybody to make you feel unworthy. You're precious in the sight of God.

Question for Reflection

Is your worth decided by how you see yourself in God's eyes or from someone who takes pleasure in making you feel you're nothing without them? Who decides your value?
