Howdy Beloved,
Music has always been an essential part of my life. When I was a child growing up in the South, we welcomed gospel music in our home. Likewise, my Big Mama and cousin Bibby were musical legends. Big Mama was the choir director and could raise a hymn-like none other. Bibby was a professional singer at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, NJ. Like Granny, she could hit those high notes and stir your soul. They both sang from the spirit and gave Him all the glory.
Among my favorite artists were Mahalia Jackson, Andre Crouch, Walter Hawkins, and Love Center Choir. James Cleveland and CeCe & BeBe Winans. They were the music legends during that time. Their music still lingers in the hearts of countless others. Nothing compares to and ever will do to the music industry what they have done. It was songs that impacted lives and changed the era of our time.
As time brought different styles of Christian music, I discovered a new blend of music that captured my heart. It came with lyrics about faith in God. Artists like Chris Tomlin, Mandisa, Michael W. Smith, Kari Jobe, and Phil Wickman introduced us to Contemporary Christian Music. Likewise, my idea of this music is not what most say this music represents. It brought something different and refreshing. Whereas gospel songs stir the soul, these songs express pure faith in God and help us experience hope beyond our challenges. They remind us no season we go through is mightier than God’s power to deliver us.
Then, a new genre of music took over my life and has become something I cannot live without. That, my Friend, is praise and worship music. It is unlike any other I have ever listened to. What makes these songs so distinguishable, you ask? Well, isn’t that obvious? Praise and worship music is all about who God is. It is music that explains His sovereignty. These songs are all about the handiwork of God and His role as the Holy Spirit in our lives. Say what you want, but no style of music compares to praise and worship. It is like the air I breathe, and I could not live without such heart-stirring selections.
With artists like Don Moen, Ron Kenoly, Integrity Music, and Darlene Zschech, their music will take you on a journey that opens your eyes to the true and living God. You find yourself basking in His presence, giving Him reverence while allowing Him to invade the place. Such power results in healing and redemption as God shows up and shows off.
So, this year, I want to share my 2023 Spotify Wrapped of my top songs. It is a combination of all the genres I enjoy.
