The Heart of Christmas

Updated: Feb 9, 2023

Greetings, Beloved,

Are you enjoying this festive time of the year? I am! I realize for some; the holidays represent joy, peace, and hope. But for others, it highlights sadness, sorrow, and pain because of an event that shattered your life. It is possible, you’re struggling to make ends meet. Whatever your situation may be, you can experience peace. One way to do so is through music. And Christmas music is the best means to bring cheer and gladness to the heart.

So, to help prepare our hearts to gain clarity; for December, I will share a host of songs to remind you of the true reason for the season. The world has forgotten why we celebrate Christmas. It’s time to get back to the heart of Christmas. What would that be, you ask? It’s all about Baby Jesus and the gift He brought us through His birth. He presented us with salvation. Christ was born to save and deliver us. Though we don’t know the exact date of His birth, it was a glorious occasion. The angelic host filled the sky with shouts of praise proclaiming; Then suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host (angelic army) praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest [heaven], And on earth peace among men with whom He is well-pleased.” (Luke 2:13-14, AMP). These had brought the Shepherds the good news about the Savior’s birth. They hurry off to Bethlehem. When these men beheld the Christ child lying in the manger, they couldn’t keep it to themselves. They declared this momentous event to all. Everyone was astounded. (Luke 2:8-12). His birth caused honor and exaltation.

The mood of this momentous season has changed. People have made it more about receiving than giving. Sure, the Magi brought Jesus valuable gifts. And blessing someone with presents is nice. Now, it’s more about shopping at the mall. Many even say Happy Holidays and not Merry Christmas. Even movies display Santa Claus and the misconception of acquiring true love. And since His birth, they have been trying to take Jesus out of Christmas. It began with Herod when he sent the Wise Men to discover where the baby would be born. But he had no interest in glorifying Jesus. He had set in place what he thought was an elaborate plot to destroy him. 7 Then Herod secretly sent for the magi and learned from them the [exact] time the star [had first] appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” (Matthew 2:7-8). They set out on their travel until they saw the star that had appeared in the East. After an extended journey, the Wise Men rejoiced with excitement at its appearance. Entering the place, they saw the Child with Mary; His mother then fell and worshiped Him. They presented treasures of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. God provided divine protection by warning them in a dream not to return to Herod. So, they took another route back to their country. (2:10-12).

Herod failed, and so has the world. There will always be a remnant unafraid to proclaim what Christmas is about. Therefore, in celebration of this special day, and to bring comfort, hope, and encouragement to you, enjoy these songs. Allow the lyrics to penetrate your mind as they become a constant reminder about who He is. Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. For to us, a Child shall be born, to us, a Son shall be given; And the government shall be upon His shoulder, And His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6). So, go tell about the wonder of the Child. And when you look closely, you’ll find it in the warmth of a smile to the stranger you pass on the streets. It’s in helping the underprivileged and giving someone hope beyond what they imagined. Also, merely checking on your neighbor shows God’s love. You’ll discover it by letting someone knows you forgive them; then work on reconciling that relationship. And make it known by; letting your loved ones recognize how important they are.
