Never Underestimate the Power of God

Updated: Oct 18, 2019

Some circumstances seem like giants that are surrounding you on every side. It’s as if you’re blocked in their net and there’s no way out. And if help doesn’t come soon; they will smash you to pieces. Beloved, it’s possible you’re overestimating the power of the problems and underestimating the giant inside of you. Your lens is clouded and blurry. Also, fear has created a false image that’s a lie. They even overload your mind with doubt and anxiety. You need to remember who’s you are, and God’s power to turn the unthinkable into the extraordinary.

You need encouragement. And here’s the story to remind you how magnificent God is. Goliath terrified the Israelites. And who wouldn’t be? He stood six cubits and a span. That was about nine feet and ten inches (1 Samuel 17:4). His armor was impenetrable, and he appeared unstoppable. He taunted the army of Israel as he boasted about his strength and abilities. (Vs 8-11). His words sent fear through them. But there was a shepherd boy named David. It was an honor for him to accept this horrid giant’s challenge. But it was appalling to David how Goliath defied the Lord God Almighty. Then David spoke to the men who were standing by him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes the disgrace [of his taunting] from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has taunted and defied the armies of the living God?” (1 Samuel 17:26, AMP). David saw the giant as already defeated. And though it seems an impossible task; David assured King Saul he would fight the Philistine.

But Saul didn’t believe David was qualified to go up against such a formidable foe. (VS. 31-38). With confidence, David tells Saul of his victories and reassures him he is more than able to conquer Goliath. And Saul grants him the request. With five stones and his sling, this little lad approaches his oppressor. Goliath looks at David with disdain. It’s was an insult to him. He boasted about how he would feed David to the birds of the air. The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with[shepherd’s] staffs?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the sky and the beasts of the field.” (1 Samuel 17:43-44). But this little shepherd boy was fearless. He knew the battle was over before it had begun. David knew God was with him and nothing could stand against him. He evens warns the Philistine of his fate. Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have taunted.

This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that this entire assembly may know that the Lord does not save with the sword or with the spear; for the battle is the Lord’s and He will hand you over to us.” (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

When Goliath advanced toward David, with a history with the Lord and faith in God; he runs towards him. With his sling and one stone, he slung it and hit the Philistine in the forehead. It embedded the stone deep into Goliath’s head. He fell, flat on his face, defeated, crushed, and dead. But David wasn’t finished. He disarms the giant, and with Goliath’s sword, he decapitated him. And the army of Israel devours the Philistines and take home a mighty spoil. (VS 50-54).

Therefore, Beloved, who is this enemy who keeps taunting you? What are those circumstances against your God who’s mighty in battle and nothing is too hard for Him? (Psalms 24:8; Genesis 18:14)? What senseless threats are making you frightened? When you continue to focus on the plight, it appears bigger than you can bear. But that’s the problem because God never intended you to carry such a burden. God wants you to cast all your anxieties on him. (1 Peter 5:7). He is greater than any Goliath. Besides, by visualizing what’s against you instead of who’s inside of you, you are overestimating those circumstances, and underestimating the matchless power of God inside of you. That giant is not all that powerful.

Something is about to happen that will show the adversary how foolish to touch the anointed child of God. This day the Lord has conquered your enemies. He’ll turn their plots and schemes against you on themselves. They boldly boasted of your failure. They waited with eager expectations of seeing you fall apart. They were sure they would smash you to pieces and prevent you from moving forward. But this day, make no apologies, your toughest times will be the best time of your life. Get Ready! Your Red-Carpet Moment has arrived! This day God will hand you over to me, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky and the wild beasts of the earth, so that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. (1 Samuel 17:46). This day, they will realize how special you are to God. This day, they will recognize, the Lord is for you and no weapon formed against you shall prosper.
