Difference Between the Holy Spirit's Guidance and Emotions

Our emotions are an essential part of our lives. However, we must master them, or they will master us. Emotions are how we deal with situations and matters of the heart. We expressed them in different ways. According to the UWA article Science of Emotions, the six basic emotions are happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust. Psychologist Robert Plutchik identified eight basic emotions and added trust and anticipation to this list. (1)

Because our emotions are fragile, we do not want them to guide us, as it can result in making unwise decisions. You are not thinking clearly because emotions compel you to react irrationally. In that single moment, you could do something you will later regret. Still, people enjoy receiving compliments, applause, and accolades. However, when someone corrects you or tells you the truth that you do not want to hear, you become angry. Your emotions might take over, causing you to react by lashing out.

Take a breath. Be still and allow God to overtake your emotions with His Holy Spirit. John 16:13, AMP tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us in all truth.

As we walk by the Spirit, we will not fulfill the impulsive desires of our sinful nature. (Galatians 5:16). In other words, the Holy Spirit is our guidance counselor. As He shows us where we should go, He will usher us where we can lie down in green pastures as He leads us by still waters. We can experience peace and tranquility in our hearts, minds, and souls. There, in His presence, we can hear from Him.

Can you hear Him speaking to you through that song? It could be a word of encouragement or even a gentle correction from somebody. Maybe the Lord allows a stranger to cross your path with a message that sticks with you closer than a brother. It might be in the gentle breeze as the wind blows through the trees. (Proverbs 18:24)

Can you hear Him whispering your name, beckoning those who are struggling, facing challenges, and are afraid to come unto Him, and He will give you rest? Aren’t you tired of being led by your emotions? (Matthew 11:28; Proverbs 3:5-6). Beloved, trust in the Lord, not your emotions, and lean not on your understanding. Depend on His wisdom, guidance, and support for all your needs. He is your only source of solace, relief, and peace.

I pray that the song, Truth Is by Danny Gokey stirs your heart.
