A mustard seed is a tiny seed. It is merely two milters in size. And God wants us to have faith the size of this small seed. “He answered, “Because of your little faith [your lack of trust and confidence in the power of God]; for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, if you have [living] faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and [if it is God’s will] it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20, AMP). And again, in Luke 17:6, the Lord emphasizes the importance of faith. “And the Lord said, “If you ]have [confident, abiding] faith in God[even as small] as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree[which has very strong roots], ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea’; and [if the request was in agreement with the will of God] it would have obeyed you.” Faith is essential for each believer. It’s a priceless gift to treasure. And faith comes with boundless benefits when it’s activated.
In fact, throughout scripture, we can see how important faith is for the life of a Christian. It is even impossible for us to please God without it. “But without faith, it is impossible to [walk with God and] please Him, for whoever comes [near] to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He rewards those who [earnestly and diligently] seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6). The reference about having faith the size of a mustard seed is about the power of faith. A mustard bush reaches the height of between 6 and 20 feet with a 20-foot spread, although exceptional plants can reach 30 feet tall under ideal conditions. (1). Though it is a tiny seed grown in India, Africa, and the Middle East; it grows into a huge tree.
So, this teaching in the Bible is as an example to encourage us when the enemy tries to place fear in our heart. The Lord doesn’t require great faith to do remarkable things. He’s telling us to use the smallest amount of faith, and He’ll perform the extraordinary. Faith begins for each Christian small, but the more we apply it to the principles found in the Word of God, the stronger our faith becomes. It spans the globe; as did the gospel of Christ. When we found ourselves in what seems an impossible situation, we can activate the tiniest faith and expect unthinkable results. This testimonial becomes a witness to countless others. This is why it’s all-important to walk by faith and not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7). The problems can seem too large for us to believe God can handle. But when we are not afraid to use the mustard seed faith; Christ will achieve an incredible outcome. Like David, we can face that Goliath with confidence in the Lord because He conquered the battle before it starts.
