Do unborn babies or those who died in infancy go to heaven?
God knows every soul, even those of a baby. David’s baby by Bathsheba dies and in 2 Samuel 12:23 he indicates he would be with his baby again. “But now he is dead; why should I [continue to] fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him [when I die], but he will not return to me.” Though this child was conceived through David’s adultery with Bathsheba, God doesn’t hold the baby accountable for His parent’s sin. This shows babies are destined for heaven. What about those babies aborted? Though the Bible doesn’t mention the word abortion, God knows every soul (Psalms 139:13-16). Some want us to believe they were never human. They say it’s just a dot. But from the moment of conception, life begins. Even this scripture is proof God sees us as a viable human being.
First, we are all born in sin. (Psalms 51:1). No one other than Jesus was born sinless. So that we don’t stay in this state of sin, Jesus died for the sins of the world. And He [that same Jesus] is the propitiation for our sins [the atoning sacrifice that holds back the wrath of God that would otherwise be directed at us because of our sinful nature—our worldliness, our lifestyle]; and not for ours alone, but also for [the sins of all believers throughout] the whole world. (1 John 2:2, 2 Corinthians 5:21). And because of the attributes of God, the penalty of sin does not go unpunished. And though all are subject to judgment, babies never had the chance to decide to serve the Lord. They are incapable of deciding right from wrong. They don’t even know they are in a sinful state and separated from God.
Romans 6:23 states the wages of sin is death. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And Jesus is the only means by which to be saved. (Acts 4:12). Those who were aborted, or died in infancy, even though a miscarriage, didn’t have the opportunity to willingly sin. Psalms 139:13. However, we are all conceived with the sin nature brought on by Adam. (Psalms 51:5). But God is good and full of mercy and His sacrificial death on the cross it is possible this covers the babies. Psalms 136:26
Given these truths from God’s Word, because of God’s grace, and established on His character of love, grace, and compassion, these precious souls will be in His Kingdom. Even the account of David’s confidence in seeing his child again gives us hope. And Jesus’ invitation to bring the children to Him is comforting. “But He said, “Leave the children alone, and do not forbid them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14). God even knows us before we are born. He knew had those babies had not to be snatched away by abortion or had the mother not had a miscarriage, or the baby died early in life, they would have had the opportunity to become who God created them to be. Your eyes have seen my unformed substance And in Your book were all written The days that were appointed for me, When as yet there was not one of them [even taking shape]. With the record of David’s confidence, he would see his child again it assures us that babies could go to heaven. (Psalms 139:16) Based on these certainties, I believe it is fitting to conclude these precious souls are in heaven, in the presence of God, enjoying life to the fullest.
