Is It Permissible for a Christian to Wear Tattoos?

In the old testament, God clearly commands; “You shall not make any cuts on your body [in mourning] for the dead, nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves; I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28, AMP). Though we are not under the law the question of Christian having tattoos, (Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15) even if it’s a symbol of Christianity, is not to be taken lightly.
And the New Testament does not mention if we are or shouldn’t get a tattoo. But the Bible is clear that our actions, behaviors, and customs are to glorify God. So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of [our great] God. (1 Corinthians 10:31). And before taking any such actions, we need to consider that it does not give us any reason that God would permit us to get tattoos or body piercing. Thus, be sure to honor and please God in all our ways. This includes what markings or piercings we put on our body. Am I now trying to win the favor and approval of men, or of God? Or am I seeking to please someone? If I were still trying to be popular with men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10).
Motives for a Tattoo
The Bible is clear that our outer appearance is to be of a humble and meek servant of God. In our external appearance, it is to draw others to Him and not ourselves. Your adornment must not be merely external—with interweaving and elaborate knotting of the hair and wearing gold jewelry, or [being superficially preoccupied with] dressing in expensive clothes; 4 but let it be [the inner beauty of] the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, [one that is calm and self-controlled, not overanxious, but serene and spiritually mature] which is very precious in the sight of God. (1 Peter 3:3-4). So, what is the purpose of imprinting a tattoo on your body? If there is any doubt in your mind that your behavior satisfies God, then you would be wise not to engage in such an activity.
But he who is uncertain [about eating a particular thing] is condemned if he eats because he is not acting from faith. Whatever is not from faith is sin [whatever is done with doubt is sinful]. (Romans 14:23).
Also, we are given a specific principle to guide us on the issue of what we do with our body in His Word. Our body is the temple of God, His handiwork. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God and that you are not your own [property]? 20 You were bought with a price [you were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made His own]. So then, honor and glorify God with your body. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Thus, with this in mind and this great truth from the Word of God, we have to take deep thought on what we do with our body. Since our body belongs to God, we must make sure to consider that whatever we do we have His blessing to do so and it pleases Him.
Also, tattoos carry a definite message. Such an inscription on your body declares what your values are. It will be wise to give great consideration before getting a tattoo because in most instances they are permanently sealed on your body. If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. (James 1:5). Think before you act. Think of the long-term repercussions a tattoo has.
Christian Tattoos
In regards to Christians wearing tattoos such as a cross or a scripture being placed on your body, you may justify such actions by convincing yourself that it is a conventional avenue to witness to the unbeliever. You have to ask yourself is it permissible by God’s standards? Our primary goal to do anything is to bring glory, honor, and praise to the Lord. All things are lawful [that is, morally legitimate, permissible], but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life]. (1 Corinthians 10:23). Still, some may use scripture to fulfill their own desire for the wearing of a tattoo. You may argue that it’s Ok as long as it symbolizes being a Christian.
To the weak I became [as the] weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means [in any and every way] save some [by leading them to faith in Jesus Christ]. 23 And I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings along with you. (1 Corinthians 9:22-23).
Therefore, wearing a Christian tattoo is questionable if it’s effective and beneficial for evangelizing the gospel of Christ. The best means to share the gospel is by engaging with the unbeliever. A tattoo can never substitute for such. So, Beloved, if you’re thinking of getting a Christian tattoo be sure your motives and intentions for such are pure and seek the wisdom of God.
