A Love Letter to My Mother and Big Mama

Updated: Apr 23

Dearest Mother and Big Mama:

Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6, AMP

You are extraordinary. The way you keep our family functioning is incredible. From the dusk of dawn to the midnight hour, you make sure you meet all our needs. From preparing the meals, helping with homework, and spending quality time with us - to tenderly pampering the family back to health, you give us a sense of security and hope. You start early in the morning, praying over us as we sleep and slumber, asking God to shield and protect us. Then, you go to your job (whether at or outside the home) - and juggle what to others may be the impossible, still, completing your regular task while dealing with remarkable demands. But you never allow such to keep you from working efficiently and effectively. Your devotion and hard work never cease to astound us.

Mom, you both have been instrumental in guiding us to lead a righteous life. You have implanted the Word of God within us daily, teaching us how to act. And you took us to church and helped us build a firm spiritual foundation based on godly principles. Your exemplary conduct has led the family to build healthy and harmonious relationships. Even to trust but not to be naïve. We learned to treat others with a sense of grace and dignity. You even taught us to make wise and sound judgments and choose right over wrong. Your counsel on being respectful, thoughtful, and compassionate made us better individuals while teaching us to help others.

You encouraged us to put forth our best effort in whatever we do and to pursue our dreams even if it means finding another method to accomplish such. And during times of adversity, to trust God no matter what. Mom, Big Mama despite both your busy schedule, you spent quality time with us. “Off duty” never applies to either of you, for you had no clue what it meant to take a break. Mom and Big Mama, you are super cool, patient, affectionate, enduring, loyal and loving, kind and tenderhearted, wise, strong, beautiful and radiant, and the best mother and grandmother ever. I am glad God gave me you for my mother and Grandmother.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Though my mother and grandmother are rejoicing with the Lord, I hope this letter has stirred your heart and inspired you deeply. Mothers and Grandmothers are incredible. They are worthy of this and so much more. May this peppy, funny song, “Mom’s Song” By Anita Renfroe bless and fill you with joy!
