Still, from a small girl growing up in the South, I knew God had a spectacular purpose for me. Likewise, I had those big dreams for myself. Her resilience inspired me to become a writer and never to; allow anything to stop me from achieving my goals. She lost her eyesight after her children were grown and had families; of their own. So, I would read the Bible to her and join her in her monthly gathering at the Mother’s Board Meetings held at Antioch Baptist Church. Those women of grace poured into my life and gave me a sense of belonging and confidence. So, when I received the report, I was pregnant, I knew I had a precious life; I had to set an example. So, I promised myself that if; I did not get married, I would not have any more children. I kept my promise. Years later, I have no regrets because I can share my story and use my inspirational readings to empower countless others. Alexander Complex to restore hope within the community which was plagued by drug addicts, violence, hopelessness, and despair. Executed a plan with the residents and several leaders of the Community which brought awareness of the unhumanly unsafe living conditions. Organized a Bible Study with the late Mother Martha Sheldon which was conducted in her apartment. Wrote letters to President Bill Clinton and NJ State Senators - Served as a liaison at the monthly community meetings. Orchestrated an exclusive meeting and met with the Executive Director of OHA with key residents in my apartment which lead to change and improvement. We witness God change and transform lives - The community was restored - renewed and rejuvenated. As Site Director, successfully organized and implemented the overall operations of the program. Assisted children in the completion of homework, collaborated with the Principal, Teachers, and parents to improve relationships and academic outcome, taking students on fun and exciting field trips. At the completion of the program, a special ceremony service was held in honor of the children. The Attendance included the Executive Director of OHA alone with other Community/Business Officials. Each child received an award for their outstanding achievements. OHA acknowledged me with a Certificate Of Appreciation for Developing and Initiating exceptional performance as Site Director. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT/FINANCIAL MANAGER -Dec. 1986 - July 1989 Inter-Faith Community Ensemble Supervised and Managed operations of the choir. Balance customers account with confidentiality while preparing financial statements and bank reconciliations. Scheduled and arranging of appointments - writing company newsletter. Having a condition known as lazy eye, Vernita recognized she could do nothing about her physical appearance. Still, she realized she had something of value they did not. She had the steadfast faith in God passed down to her from her Big Mama. Vernita emerged herself in Joel 2:28 and came to see herself as God saw her. She knew He had handpicked her for something far more than she could ever imagine. She often said to them, keep your eyes on Vernita because I can show you better than I can tell you. Likewise, she proclaimed, one day, she would write a book. So, Vernita composed her first play at the tender age of nine. It became the catalyst of an incredible gift that has blessed her to become a multiple award-winning Christian author. Vernita says her desire is for those I encounter to be touched and inspired by my enthusiasm in sharing the gift of knowing God, that is ever so present in my life. God has enabled her to bring her writing and speaking talents in a full circle. Vernita likewise gravitated to become a demonstrative praise worshiper. It is another faithful tribute from the heart, which the Lord further developed when she served as a Minister in Training at Beth-El Love Christian Center in Orange, NJ. In November 2010, they allowed her to spearhead her first Praise and Worship Conference. It seems so long ago, before Beth-El, as a single parent, Vernita used; being a recipient of welfare to her advantage. She enrolled in school and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Administration, from Essex County College. While attending college, she made the Dean’s List. Vernita likewise worked in the work-study program and became their Report Specialist in the Financial Aid Department. In October 1991, she became a Substitute Teacher. Vernita devoted her time working with Pre -K through Adult education. But her area of expertise and heart was; second grade and special education. She often used singing and acting techniques to teach her students. Through this unique method, she watched her children thrive. While working in this position, Vernita says, my unshakable faith in God stirred me to relinquish being a recipient of welfare. It was a significant milestone in my life, and I thought others would be excited too. After all, I was a young African American woman breaking away from the system to improve my life. My caseworker thought I had lost my mind. My cousin asked, “Fool, what you do that for?” Still, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I never regretted it. Her unwavering faith in God, enthusiastic demeanor, and unique teaching techniques earned her the rapport to become a Preferred Substitute Teacher.
