With a courageous and undeterred drive, she took a leap of faith and informed her Case Worker that she was relinquishing being a recipient of welfare. Neat even told her cousin, they both thought she was crazy. She recalls her cousin saying, “Fool, what you go do that for?” I thought they would be proud of me. I was a young single African American mother getting off the system. But how will such a life-changing event affect her life? What will the future hold for Vernita and her daughter?
